Long-time Sitka resident Raymond Mork died Sept. 21, 2009, in Sitka after a long battle with pneumonia. He was 78.
He was born in Hoonah on Sept. 20, 1931 to Hjalmer Mork and Eliza Moses. His grandfather was T'aaw Yaat, his Tlingit name was Naax', and he was a Raven of the D'akdeintaan clan from the Snail House.
He was raised in Lisianski Inlet with siblings William, Anna, Elmer, Betty, Agnes and Marie, where his parents worked a mining venture called the "Goldwin Prospect." Lisianski Inlet later became the town of Pelican.
In 1952, he was drafted into the United States Marines at the age of 20. He was stationed in San Francisco, Calif. and was later deployed to serve his country in the Korean War.
After being honorably discharged from the Marines in 1954, he returned to Pelican where he married Edith Max of Sitka. During their 55 years of marriage, Edith gave birth to five children: Frederick, Marie, Raymond Jr., William and Keith.
Throughout his life, he worked as a carpenter, construction worker, longshoremen, logger and fisherman. In his quiet time, he loved to hunt, fish, carve, sew skins, berry pick and make Christmas candy.
In recent years, he took special joy in his young grandchildren Kasiana, Raymond and Gus. Nothing was more special than the time he spent with them. He was also very proud of his adult grandchildren Randy, Jamison and Raeanne.
He will be remembered for his quiet strength and resolve; for his devotion to his wife and children; and kindness that he shared with so many friends and family. He will be remembered by his children for his love and the time he spent teaching them to hunt and fish.
He is preceded in death by parents Hjalmer Mork and Eliza Moses, daughter Harriet "Marie" Mork, son Raymond "JR" Mork; sisters, Betty Mork and Anna Mork.
