FAIRBANKS - An American lion skull, which was found in Alaska and predates the ice age, is set for auction in Los Angeles.

A natural history auction at Bohnhams & Butterfields will take place Dec. 7.

Auction house co-director Thomas Lindgren said the lion's skull has not been carbon-dated, but it could be between 20,000 and 30,000 years old.

The skull belonged to a private collector in St. Louis.

Lindgren said the skull will be among 900 pieces at the auction.

He said it's one of three natural science auctions Bonhams & Butterfields hosts yearly.
