Taxi service adds catamaran to fleet
Haines-Skagway Water Taxi announced it is building a boat scheduled to begin serving Skagway, Haines and Juneau on June 1. The Fjordland, a 65-foot fiberglass catamaran designed to carry up to 49 passengers, is being built by Knight & Carver Yacht Center in San Diego, Calif.
The Haines-based company plans to market a cruise to, and tour of, Juneau to RV travelers driving the Alaska Highway, said co-owner Alison Jacobson. The Fjordland will be powered by two 600-horsepower Lugger diesels and can make the trip in about two hours with 30 minutes added to the southbound trip for wildlife viewing, the company said. Haines-Skagway Water Taxi will change its name to Alaska Fjordlines effective Jan. 1 to reflect the new business venture, Jacobson said.
Seminar focuses on negotiating
The Juneau Small Business Development Center is sponsoring a seminar called "Getting to Yes: Negotiation Techniques that Work."
The seminar presents techniques to help develop win/win solutions without locking horns. It runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the third floor conference room of the Juneau Empire Building. Cost is $10. Pre-register at 463-3789.
Cell phone firms upgrade reception in region
Two cellular phone companies say they are improving reception in Southeast.
ACS Wireless has installed two cell sites in the Juneau area, which should help enhance cellular phone coverage in Auke Bay and the Mendenhall Valley areas, according to the company. The company now has six cell sites in Juneau and 12 in Southeast. ACS Wireless is a subsidiary of Alaska Communications Systems.
Cellular One is also improving its cellular phone reception. The company constructed a new cell site in Skagway which will enhance reception in Skagway and northern Lynn Canal, the company said. Cellular One has 19 cell phone sites around Southeast, said Kristi DeBron, regional marketing manager.
Seafood contest taking product entries
The Alaska Symphony of Seafood is looking for a few good products. Entry forms are due by Dec. 13 with the official judging taking place at the Westin Alyeska Prince Hotel in Girdwood on Jan. 26.
Symphony entrants must have commercially viable recipes that use Alaska salmon, white fish or shellfish harvested in Alaska. The retail, food service and gift/specialty category winners receive transportation to and exhibit space at the International Boston Seafood Show held in March to showcase their product.
