SERRC brings high schoolers to Juneau

Posted: Friday, November 28, 2008

Last week, SERRC - Alaska's Educational Resource Center's Career Connections program - brought high school students to Juneau to learn about employment opportunities in Alaska's high-growth industries.

Designed to help 11th- and 12th-grade students explore career options, SERRC's Fall Career Connections session was composed of 30 students from the Chatham, Iditarod, Klawock, Wrangell and Yakutat school districts.

These students attended a five-day training seminar, Nov. 17-21, in Juneau, where they traveled to work sites - mining facilities, Bartlett Regional Hospital, the University of Alaska Southeast Technology Center - and attended discussions with representatives of union and trade organizations along with construction, transportation, health care, oil, gas and mining personnel.

Career Connections is funded in part by a Denali Training Fund Youth Initiative grant.
