The Salvation Army is accepting applications for kettle workers from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday at 439 Willoughby Ave.

Planetarium puts on solar system shows

The Marie Drake Planetarium will present three shows on "The Hidden Solar System: Asteroids, Comets, Meteors" on Dec. 5 and 6.

The first show, a 30-minute presentation for youths ages 4-6, is at 7 p.m. Dec. 5. A 60-minute show for those 6 years old through their teen-age years is at 7 p.m. Dec. 6, followed at 8 p.m. by a more technical 60-minute show for adults.

All shows are free. The planetarium is located downtown between the Juneau-Douglas High School and Harborview School.

Generic service letters mailed for holidays

Generic holiday letters to military members are being accepted until Jan. 15, 2001, through Operation Dear Abby.

Four addresses are provided through the program, which limits mail to first-class letter mail of 13 ounces or less. Letters should be addressed to "Any Service Member, Operation Dear Abby" at one of the following: APO AE 09135 for Europe and Southwest Asia; FPO AE 09646 for the Mediterranean Basin; APO AP 96285 for the Far East; or FPO AP 96385 for the Pacific Basin.

Humane Society hosts open house Dec. 9

The Gastineau Humane Society is hosting an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 9.

Volunteers will offer shelter tours and animals will be up for adoption. Refreshments will be served.

The shelter has also released its holiday "wish list" of supplies it is seeking from donors. Among the items are new toys, dog and cat cookies, pet food, towels, copy paper, pens, cotton balls, rubbing alcohol, Q-tips and more volunteers.
