Remove the food tax

Letter to the editor

Posted: Tuesday, November 29, 2005

One tax that should be exempt is the food tax, not only for seniors, but all citizens of Juneau. The tax money saved would mean more food on the table and another gallon of gas per week for the car. Low-income families and others would benefit from this exemption.

Washington state had this tax on food years ago, and was dropped because of public outcry. The tax on food was called the Government Sin Tax.

Why pay tax on the staples of life? The more food you eat, the more tax you pay. There are hungry people all over this world, and Juneau is no exception.

Take the tax off food, and put a smile on low-income family faces.
