Michael Muir and Cindy Goff, both of Lexington, Ky., and Allison Tyas of Norfolk, England, are taking a 1,000-mile road trip from Louisville, Ky., to Cedar Key, Fla., by horse-drawn carriage.
They are retracing the route of Michael's great-grandfather, naturalist John Muir, who once made a 1,000-mile hike. John Muir was a founder and first president of the Sierra Club.
The trio, now in Southeast Georgia, hope to show that disabilities shouldn't prevent a person from going on an adventure. Michael Muir has multiple sclerosis. Goff is in a wheelchair after being paralyzed in a riding accident. Tyas is a survivor of childhood leukemia.
Their pace is roughly 20 miles a day. Only two riders and their two dogs, Rose and Burt, travel in the carriage at any time. The other person drives a car ahead of the route to secure lodging.
