Juneau Jumpers annual holiday fund-raising show and pie sale - The internationally known youth jump rope club will perform at 7 p.m. at the Glacier Valley Elementary School gym. The group, which has 54 active members in grades 2-12, will perform choreographed jump-rope routines to music and will demonstrate skills that have won members national and international awards. Pies and cakes will be auctioned off as a fund-raiser during the show. Admission is $3 per child, $5 per adult and $10 per family. JRC/The Alaska Club 11th annual Jingle Jog - Check in at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. race start at JRC/The Alaska Club's Mendenhall Valley location. This 5-kilometer run/1-mile walk is sponsored by JRC/The Alaska Club's Aerobics Conference team and is open to everyone. There will be prizes, and Santa will be on hand to give out candy canes. Holiday Cup 2004 indoor soccer tournament registration - Registration will be held through Tuesday, Nov. 30, for the Holiday Cup 2004 competitive indoor soccer tournament. The tourney, to be played Dec. 18-31, will have five coed divisions: Elementary (grades 4-5), Middle School (grades 6-8), Junior (high school age 16-younger), Senior (ages 17-20) and Masters (age 21-older). Coaches and managers interested in organizing a team must submit a roster by Nov. 30. JRC/The Alaska Club winter break sports camps - Register by Friday, Dec. 17, for eight days of sports and games for school children during the holiday break. Activities include racquetball, basketball, soccer, badminton, tennis, wallyball and more. The cost is $120 plus tax for four days and $240 plus tax for eight days for JRC/The Alaska Club members, and $135 plus tax and $270 plus tax for non-club members. Day rates are available. Camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and before care (7-9 a.m.) and after care (4-6 p.m.) is available for an extra $20 per week. No camp takes place on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. Juneau Skating Club holiday exhibition skate - Performance starts at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19, at Treadwell Arena. There will be four skating performances by 13 members from the club, then the public is invited to join the skaters on the ice until 6:15 p.m. Santa Claus is scheduled to make an appearance. Yukon River Quest 2005 registration - The longest annual canoe and kayak race in the world is accepting applications for its 2005 race. The race takes place June 29 through July 3, and the 460-mile (740-kilometer) course follows the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City, Yukon Territory. The deadline for entries is May 26, 2005, and more information is available on the event's Web site at http://www.yukonriverquest.com. Last year 51 teams from around the world, including racers from Southeast Alaska, started the race and 35 teams finished. A limit of 70 teams has been set for 2005 and the race is open to tandem and solo kayaks and recreational tandem canoes and voyageur canoes (that seat 6-14 paddlers). Entry fees are $600 (Canadian) for tandem canoes and kayaks, $300 for solo kayaks and $200 per person for voyageur canoes. The total purse for the race is $15,500 (Canadian), which is distributed among the top 10 teams overall and to category winners. The first-place team receives $3,000 and an entry into the 2006 race. Note to waterfowl hunters - Hunters seeking waterfowl hunting permits to take waterfowl, snipe or cranes on the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge can obtain the permits at Western Auto, Rayco Sales or at the Douglas office of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. The permit is meant as an orientation for hunters using the refuge and also allows ADF&G to collect duck hunting effort and harvest data. Juneau Parks and Recreation Department survey - Juneau Parks and Rec invites sports participants and parents to complete an Internet survey about P&R sports programs. To combat declining participation the department is considering changing when sports are offered through the year, and it is seeking public feedback. Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Saturdays from 6-8 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Recreational badminton - Auke Bay group: This group meets from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the Auke Bay Community School gym. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
