Tax strategies to be presented at meeting

JUNEAU - The Women's Network for Entrepreneurial Training monthly meeting will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday in the third-floor conference room in the Juneau Empire building, at 3100 Channel Drive.

John Logan, a certified public accountant with Logan General Tax Practice, will present tips to business owners for maximizing business deductions for the year end and preparing for the new tax year.

The free presentation is open to the public and will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring a brown bag lunch, and are encouraged to come a few minutes early and stay a few minutes afterwards for networking opportunities with other business professionals.

Class to focus onfinancial statements

JUNEAU - The Juneau Small Business Development Center is offering a class to small-business owners on understanding financial statements.

Participants will learn to understand key financial indicators such as break-even, balance sheets, income statements and cash-flow statements for business planning and financial proposals. Reading and creating financial statements will be covered by Jackie Stewart, center director.

The class will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday in the third-floor conference room at the Juneau Empire building, at 3100 Channel Drive. The cost is $25. Space is limited and pre-registration is requested.

Bank promotes employee to manager

JUNEAU - Alaska Pacific Bank has promoted Lisa Joven to office manager and consumer loan officer at its Nugget branch.

Joven was formerly the bank's central services supervisor. She has 14 years of banking experience and has worked for Alaska Pacific for three years. Joven has a bachelor's degree from California State University in Bakersfield, Calif. In her new position, she is responsible for consumer lending, business development, and customer service at the bank's Nugget Mall office in Juneau, and she oversees the day-to-day operations and staff at that office.

Alaska Pacific Bank is a locally owned community bank serving Southeast Alaska since 1935.

Alaskan Brewing Co. wins award for porter

JUNEAU - Alaskan Brewing Co.'s Alaskan Smoked Porter won a bronze medal in the Smoked Beer category at the European Beer Star Awards. The winners were announced at the beverage industry's largest trade fair, the BRAU Beviale in Nuremberg, Germany.

The international beer contest was started in 2004 by the Association of Private Breweries in Germany and the Association of Small and Independent Breweries in Europe. This year 575 beers from 212 breweries and 28 nations were submitted, setting a record for number of participants and marking a 30 percent increase over last year.

The brewing company also will offer a limited release of its award-winning Alaskan Barley Wine in 22-ounce bottles for the first time ever in January.
