A man faces an assault charge after allegedly beating another man to the point he was unrecognizable Sunday morning.

Dennis Wharton faces a third-degree assault charge after the attack, according to a press release from the Juneau Police Department.

JPD and Capital City Fire and Rescue arrived at an apartment in the 100 block of South Franklin Street at about 2:20 a.m. in response to a 911 call. The victim, identified as a 44-year-old Juneau man, was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries that were serious, but not life-threatening, according to the release.

The victim and Wharton argued about an alcohol purchase prior to the attack, the release states. Wharton punched the victim several times before the victim could crawl out of the apartment and contact a neighbor for help, according to the release.

Wharton was taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center and was held without bail on the felony charge.
