Each year the Eaglecrest Board of Directors offers the Hilary Lindh Scholarship Program. The deadline to submit applications is noon Friday.
The board awards four season passes, one each to a boy and girl enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade, and one each to a boy and girl in sixth through 12th grades. Applications are judged on scholastic achievement, competitive spirit and financial need.
Hilary Lindh scholarship applications are now available at any school, Foggy Mountain, Nugget Alaskan Outfitters, Eaglecrest Ski area or at www.skijuneau.com.To be considered for this scholarship, students must be a resident of Juneau, attend Juneau School District schools, or an equivalent private school, and have maintained a 'C' average for the previous school year. Applications can be dropped off at Eaglecrest or any Juneau School District office. Winners will be announced Dec. 10.
The Eaglecrest Board of Directors established this scholarship program in 1992 in recognition of Lindh's silver medal in the 1992 Winter Olympics and of the hard work she has dedicated to downhill ski racing. She started skiing in Juneau at an early age and won the U.S. and World Junior Championship in the downhill at age 16. Hilary attended a Utah ski academy in 1984 and eight years later won an Olympic silver medal. She competed on the World Cup Circuit for 12 years, winning three World Cup Downhill races, and participated in three Olympic Games. Hilary won the 1997 World Downhill Championship and retired in March 1997. She was inducted into the U. S. Ski Hall of Fame in April 2006 and the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame in February 2009.
