Association encourages hockey

Letter to the editor

I would like to clarify what may be a misperception as a result of a previous letter to the editor. The Juneau-Douglas Ice Association (JDIA) is a nonprofit organization that runs the youth hockey programs. Our philosophy is to ensure that all youth who wish to play hockey may do so, regardless of their financial ability. We encourage the use of the city's scholarship program, which will pay up to $100 per year towards youth sports registration, for those who qualify, and JDIA will provide the remainder of the fee. Also, as a result of grants received from the city's Youth Activity Grants program, we offer "loaner gear" to those who can not afford to purchase their own equipment.

This has been a very successful program and I urge anyone who wants to participate in youth hockey to sign up for the next season, which starts Jan. 3. Registration will be in early December.

Ken Collison

President, JDIA
