FAIRBANKS - A car went through a guard rail on the Johansen Expressway and landed about 40 feet below in the railroad yard.
Fairbanks police said the car landed beside a train early Saturday. The driver of the car, Al Yatlin Jr., 33, of Fairbanks, was in serious condition at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. Fairbanks police say it appeared his back was broken. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
The crash happened about 3 a.m. as Yatlin was heading east. His car hit the barrier separating the eastbound and westbound traffic lanes and swung back across the eastbound lanes.
Police said a snow berm acted as a ramp and pushed the car up onto the guard rail. The car slid on the guard rail and then dropped into the rail yard.
