Fairbanks officials want new emergency center

FAIRBANKS - Mayor Luke Hopkins says the Fairbanks North Star Borough needs a new emergency command center.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says the borough's current center occupies less than 1,000 square feet in a building that has no satellite communication capacity, bad lighting and poor ventilation.

The newspaper says Hopkins hopes to get grant money to pay for a new $1.1 million center. When not in use during an emergency, it would be used as a training center.

The Borough Assembly is to discuss the proposal at a Thursday work session.
