Kings win Pilot Invite

Manacio, Cadiente and Harvey all win individual titles for Crimson Bears

Posted: Sunday, December 02, 2001

The Ketchikan Kings were kings of the mat after winning the team title at the Juneau-Douglas Brandon Pilot Wrestling Invitational, which was held Friday and Saturday at the JDHS main gymnasium.

The Kings finished with 174 team points, ahead of second-place Petersburg with 159 and Juneau who placed third with 155 points. Team scores were only kept for those three teams.

Although the Crimson Bears fell short of their own high expectations, head wrestling coach Bob Mahon was pleased with his team's effort.

"You always wish you can win, but with three varsity guys out with injuries, I'm happy," Mahon said. "I got to put some guys in different places and saw some good things. Some stepped up and did a good job."

Juneau was missing varsity wrestlers 215-pounder Justin Rasmussen, 152-pounder Stephen Perry and 145-pounder Reid Dihle who suffered an injury in Thursday's dual against Valdez.

Three Crimson Bears won individual titles. Senior Anthony Manacio IV won the 112-pound weight class, junior Isaac Cadiente won at 140 pounds and senior Jerrod Harvey won at 275 pounds.

Senior Vernon Perry placed second at 119 pounds, freshman Sungie Musarra took third at 103 pounds, junior Robert Vicario placed third at 189 pounds and senior Jonathan Moore placed third at 215 pounds.

Senior Amanda Krafft helped her chances of making regions and a possible state berth with a fourth-place finish at 112 pounds. Krafft lost her third-place match 6-0 against Brian Westfall of Craig. Senior Willy Dodd took fourth at 125 and junior David Liliedahl took fourth at 135 for the Crimson Bears.

Cadiente had a thrilling route to his championship. After winning his initial match against Delbert Paratrovich 12-3 on Friday, Cadiente upset the state's No. 2 ranked 140 pounder, Daniel McCarty of Anchorage Christian Schools, 2-1 in double overtime during their semifinal match early on Saturday.

The first time the wrestlers met at the ACS Invitational on Nov. 9-10, Cadiente was disqualified for unintentionally hooking McCarty in the mouth, so Cadiente was looking for a little payback.

"I had him in a headlock and caught him with my finger in his mouth," Cadiente said. "I got lost a couple points for stalling but he didn't score any points on me. He didn't score any points on me today too. It feels pretty good to redeem myself."

Cadiente, ranked No. 3 at 140 pounds, but seeded fourth at the tournament, scored an escape in the second period against McCarty. The score remained 1-0 until Cadiente was penalized one point for stalling with eight seconds remaining in the match. The wrestlers went into the first one-minute overtime where Cadiente and McCarty battled for takedowns, but to no avail. Cadiente started down in the second overtime and won the match with an escape. McCarty wound up in fourth place after losing to Sitka's Dalton Bergman 6-3 in the consolation match.

Cadiente found more redemption in the finals en route to a 10-6 victory over Ketchikan's Steven Haseltine. After taking a 7-1 lead in the second period, Cadiente started losing steam in the third and Haseltine got as close as 7-6 with a takedown late in the second period and a reversal in the third.

After Cadiente was cautioned for stalling with a minute to go in the third, he poured it on and escaped from underneath, then took down Haseltine to seal the win.

"I'm glad because this is the first time my parents got to see me wrestle in two years," Cadiente said. "This was probably even bigger than state for me."

"He's (Cadiente) getting better," Mahon said. "I know he can beat anyone when he wants to. He broke his arm last year and it's hard to get back into it after that. Physically, he'll be back but mentally it's tough. Isaac's got on of those minds that can come back."

Manacio's victory was as well-earned but less thrilling than Cadiente's as Manacio, the state's No. 2 ranked 112 pounder, cruised to his title.

In the finals, Manacio put on a takedown clinic against the much taller Brandon Wright from Hoonah. He took down Wright seven times in his 15-6 victory.

"Tall, skinny guys are really flexible and I can't wrestle on the mat because my knee still bothers me on the mat, so I got to do my shots," Manacio said. "When I wrestle tall guys, I always fell off-balance."

He made it to the finals with a third-round pin against Ryan Buen of Valdez and a 11-6 win over Judah Allen of ACS.

"I'm really happy being home for the last match of my senior year," Manacio said. "And its kind of good because its almost over you'll get to eat what you want."

"There's kids you do expect to win all the time, but you can't count on it," Mahon said. "He (Manacio) took second at state last year and he's got a good shot this year.

Harvey won his title at the 275 pound class with a pin against John Hamilton of Ketchikan.

"It feels great," Harvey said. "I wish we could have done better as a team, but we worked hard and did our best."

Harvey put Hamilton on his back in the first period, but Hamilton managed to escape and the two wrestlers fought for position on their feet most of the second and third period. Harvey caught Hamilton again in the third and this time Hamilton was not able to get off the mat.

"Couldn't do my regular throws because coach didn't want me hurt my back," Harvey said. "But I saw my opening in the third and I took it."

"Harvey did what I think he should be able to do," Mahon said. "He gets better every match. I don't want him to keep thumping his back. If we're in the state finals and we're in it, then we'll go for it, but not now."

Harvey, who is a natural 215-pounder, said he will stay in the 275-pound weight class for regions and state to give his team a better chance to score points. But it could give him problems with a back that has been hampering him all season.

"The guys get bigger and stronger," Harvey said. "My back hurts today, but I'll get better as the week goes by."

Perry came close to a title, but lost 6-0 to Ketchikan's Jess Boyd in the 119 pound finals. Perry won a spectacular victory over Klawock's Chris Schnur with a first-period pin in the semifinals. Schnur, one of the state's best at 112 pounds, failed to make weight and was forced move up to 119 pounds, and was visibly upset after losing to Perry.

"I was expecting a long, drawn out third or fourth period match (against Schnur)," Perry said. "I think I wrestled him in seventh grade. I just went by what I saw watching Manacio wrestle him."

In his finals match against Boyd, Perry scored an escape in the second period to take a slim 1-0 lead going into the third. Boyd started down in the third, but escaped and quickly took Perry down and put him on his back. It gave Boyd a 6-1 lead, where the match ended.

"He was starting to get away and I didn't want to give up a reversal," Perry said. "I tried to get a takedown, but I got a little off-balanced. I've wrestled him three times and I haven't beat him yet."

"Vernon wrestled a perfect match until one move," Mahon said. "Vernon became a very solid wrestler over the years. When you have those two wrestlers who are that good, it can happen. Vernon again is one of guys who is capable of beating everyone."

Perry hopes to get another chance against Boyd at the Region V tournament next weekend in Sitka. The action begins Friday at 10 a.m. and continues through Saturday night.
