A woman allegedly was raped while she and her infant child slept in her bed in their downtown home over the weekend, police said today.
The 22-year-old woman, whose name wasn't released, was admitted to the Bartlett Regional Hospital emergency room Saturday morning claiming a man had sex with her without her consent earlier that morning, said police investigator Keith Mickelsen.
Police said they may have a suspect, but had made no arrests by the Empire's midday deadline. The woman knew the man who allegedly raped her, Mickelsen said.
According to the woman's statement to police, she and some friends went to her house around 2 a.m. Saturday. She said her friends, including the man who allegedly raped her, were still at her house when she went into her room to go to sleep later that morning, Mickelsen said.
The woman woke up a short time later, allegedly with the man on top of her, Mickelsen said.
"We think he may have thought she was drunker than she was, would be passed out, he could have his way with her and then he'd just leave," Mickelsen said. "We don't know for sure, but that's our guess. But she wasn't that drunk and woke up."
Mickelsen said as soon as the woman woke up the man left the room, used the bathroom, grabbed his clothing and left the house.
The man's name and age were not released.
Other than the alleged rape the woman was not physically harmed, police said. The infant was not injured.
