ANCHORAGE - The Air Force says it has suspended efforts to recover the wreckage of the F-22 fighter jet that crashed near Cantwell, killing the pilot.
Capt. Jeffrey Haney of Clarklake, Mich., was the sole occupant in the plane when it crashed Nov. 16. He was assigned to the 525th Fighter Squadron at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.
Responders have recovered Haney's remains and removed visible pieces of the wreckage.
The Air Force says any debris that could be found at the site should not be handled because of hazardous materials used to construct the plane.
According to officials, the materials could irritate skin. They say other parts of the plane that may be exposed by wind or water could contain pressurized gases or flammables.
