Viking wrestlers trying to claim third straight Southeast team title

The Petersburg Vikings will compete for their third straight Southeast team title today and Saturday at the Class 2A/3A region wrestling championships at Mount Edgecumbe High School in Sitka.

The Vikings have won the Class 2A/3A region crown each year since the current season format was introduced in 2002. Among the Petersburg wrestlers aiming for region titles this season are Neil Jenny - the defending state champ at 145 pounds and last year's region runner-up - and Alenna Nilsen, last year's region runner-up at 112 pounds.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class will earn berths to the state meet, to be held Dec. 10-11 in Seward.

Among the other top wrestlers at this weekend's region meet is Wrangell's Jake Mork, the defending state champion at 160 pounds. Mork narrowly lost to Petersburg's Jim Smith in a memorable region final last season before going on to win at state. He is competing at 160 pounds again this year.

Mount Edgecumbe's Sam Carney - who won last year's region title at 145 pounds but finished second to Jenny at the state meet - is also back, this year at 152 pounds.
