Clearcutting isn't conservation

Posted: Sunday, December 03, 2006

I see where Gov.-elect Sarah Palin named Rick Harris of Sealaska to her transition team as co-leader of the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Sound off on the important issues at

I fail to see how clearcutting and exporting thousands of acres of timber overseas has anything to do with the word "conservation."

Maybe Palin hasn't had a chance to see the environmental damage on Prince of Wales and Chichagof Islands caused by Sealaska and its Executive Vice President Rick Harris.

It seems to me that maybe it would have been more appropriate to appoint someone from an environmental group, such as the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council.

I hope that having a well-meaning word isn't in Sarah Palin's plan to cover up a destruction plan to clearcut over way into the future.
