Man dodges possible 200-year sentence

Posted: Wednesday, December 03, 2008

FAIRBANKS - A Tok man could have been sent to prison for 200 years if he were convicted on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and several lesser charges he originally faced.

Instead he'll serve two years.

Rex Defrance struck a plea agreement with prosecutors that calls for four years in prison with two of those years suspended. The 26-year-old man will also spend five years on probation.

Defrance must pay for the medical expenses of 19-year-old Dave Howard whom he was accused of beating.

The charges stemmed from an incident in August 2007 when authorities say Defrance was drinking alcohol with underage people, then beat Howard.

Authorities say Defrance left the state and was found in Montana during a routine traffic stop.
