Casey's body found on Connecticut beach

Posted: Wednesday, December 04, 2002

JUNEAU - The body of Thomas Casey - a Juneau summer resident and avid runner who failed to return from a kayak trip on Long Island Sound last month - was found Monday along the Connecticut shore.

Local residents found the body while walking along the beach at Maltby Cove in Branford, Conn., Monday afternoon. Clothing and x-rays allowed officials to positively identify the body as Casey, according to Sgt. Robert Flodquist of the East Haven Police Department.

Casey, 35, was a graduate student and teaching assistant in political science at Yale University. He disappeared Nov. 8 while on a kayak trip from East Haven to a market in Branford, from where he planned to run back home.

Casey's kayak, paddle and backpack were recovered in the first few days after he was reported missing. An extensive search was conducted by the Coast Guard, the Connecticut State Police, other local agencies, residents and friends.

Casey spent several summers in Juneau and was a constant presence at local Southeast Road Runners races. A memorial service in Juneau is tentatively planned for January. Further details will be published in the Empire as they become available.
