Group to hold holiday dinner for seniors

The Juneau Chapter of the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer's Association is sponsoring the 27th annual Senior Citizen's Holiday Dinner this Sunday, Dec. 9. The dinner will be held at the Alaskan Native Brotherhood Hall, and doors will open at 4 p.m. For more information, or to make a donation to the event, call 463-2128.

Weaving display set at Mendenhall Glacier

The Ravenstail Weavers Guild and the Northwest Coast Basketry class from the University of Alaska Southeast will be displaying weavings and demonstrating the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center Dec. 8-9. On Saturday Dec. 8 there will be weaving from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Members of the community can get involved and learn how to weave Christmas tree ornaments.

Society shares stories and memories

The Gastineau Channel Historical Society has titled its December meeting "My Favorite Things."

Members are invited to share holiday stories and memories from 3 to 5 p.m., Dec. 8, at the Parkshore Club House, 800 F Street. Bring a favorite family treasure or recipe to talk about, and a few cookies to share. The GCHS board will provide punch.

Shelves brim with holiday items

Holiday gift books, some like-new, are hot items this time of year at the Amazing Bookstore, a shop run by the Friends of the Juneau Public Libraries. Coordinator Donna Denton said that there are a wealth of holiday books on the shelves, plus boxed and single cards - many on sale. "Some are really nice for gifts," Denton said. The shop is also bulging with encyclopedia sets, cookbooks, mysteries and kids' books for all ages.

The shop is located in the Airport Shopping Mall. Hours are Monday-Friday, 10-7, Sat., 10-6 and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. For details, call 789-4913.

Family conference slated for this week

A family conference will be held Thursday Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., Friday Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Saturday Dec. 8 at 10 a.m.

A special youth meeting will be held Friday Dec. 7 from 2-4 p.m. for children ages 1-14.

Nursery provided for ages newborn to 4 years old.

The guest speakers will be Jacqui Cafiero of Brea, Calif., Rich Massiatt of Tracy, Calif. and Danny Fisher, Seminole, Okla.

The conference host is Restoration Grace Outreach Center 5636 Glacier Hwy Juneau, AK, (across from AEL&P).

Birth Center holds support group

The Juneau Family Birth Center is hosting a Baby Parent Support Group on Wednesdays from 11:30 to 1:00 PM. The topic for this week, is "Educational Toys and Gifts for the Holidays".
