Aspen Hotels names Wright as Juneau GM

Aspen Hotels of Alaska has announced the appointment of Shelly Wright as general manager of the Aspen Hotel in Juneau. She replaces Terri Russi, who will manage the Aspen Hotel in Anchorage when it opens Jan. 13.

Wright previously served as accounting manager for Silver Bay Logging and as customer service and public relations manager for Wings of Alaska. She has been a resident of Juneau since 1975.

Russi has been with Aspen Hotels since April 1999 as the general manager of the Juneau Aspen Hotel.

"Terri has been an outstanding leader in our company," said Carol Fraser, vice president of the Alaska chain. "We're excited to have her opening in Anchorage. We're equally excited to have Shelly's management experience. Her proven leadership and outstanding customer service skills will be a welcome addition to our Aspen team."

Aspen Hotels owns and operates five hotels in Alaska.

Habeger joins Royal Caribbean Cruises

Don Habeger has been appointed Royal Caribbean Cruises' director of industry relations for Alaska, Hawaii and western Canada.

Habeger, who will work out of Juneau, will act as a liaison between the company's two brands, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, and government, cruise industry and other organizations along the Pacific coast.

"We are very fortunate to have Don join our organization," said John Fox, vice president of industry relations for Royal Caribbean. "Don has more than a decade of experience in the cruise industry and is well aware of the issues involving our business in Alaska, Hawaii and western Canada."

Since 1985, Habeger has worked for Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska, formerly known as Southeast Stevedoring Corp. In 1990 he was appointed the company's port manager in Juneau. He has lived in Juneau since 1979.

Abel elected president of WBMA

Bruce Abel of Don Abel Building Supplies in Juneau was elected president of the Western Building Material Association at its 99th annual convention and showcase Nov. 14 and 15 in Portland, Ore.

Abel is the third generation involved in Don Abel Building Supplies, which was founded in 1936 by his grandfather, Don Abel Sr. The business operates two stores in Juneau: Don Abel Building Supplies Ace Hardware, and Don Abel Rentals and Small Engine Repair.

Bruce Abel became general manager of the business in 1992, president in 1996 and CEO in 1999. He has served as WBMA district director, executive committee member and insurance trustee. He also was active in the Young Westerns Club and served as club president in 1996.

Abel is on the board of directors of the Juneau Chamber of Commerce and is chairman of the mayor's task force on business personal property tax.

The Western Building Material Association is a trade organization in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
