In season: Deer (Aug.-Dec., depending on area), mountain goat (Aug.-Dec., depending on area), wolf (Aug.-April), grouse (Aug.-May), ptarmigan (Aug.-May), ducks, geese, brants, swans, snipe, crane (Sept.-Dec.), coyote (Sept.-April), hare (Sept.-April) and brown bear (Sept.-Dec.).

Dec. 7: Trail Mix annual meeting, 7 p.m., Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center. Includes program by geologist Cathy Conner, Glaciers and Trailside Geology in Juneau. Call 790-6406 for details.

Dec. 8: Cross-country ski/snowshoe hike at Eaglecrest sponsored by Juneau Parks and Recreation. Meet at the parking lot near the lodge at 9:30 a.m. Group will determine destination. Bring gear, warm layers of clothing, food and water.

Dec. 8: Juneau Alpine Club Blackerby Ridge hike. Call Larry Musarra, 586-0152, for details.

Dec. 8: Smallbore rifle silhouette meet at the Hank Harmon Rifle Range, 9 a.m. registration, shoot at 10 a.m.

Dec. 12: 4-H Nordic Ski Program sign-up, 7 p.m., Dzantik'i Henni Middle School. Call 465-8749 for details.

Dec. 13: Juneau Audubon Society panel discussion: Managing for birds, planes, hikers at the Juneau Airport - a unique challenge, 7:30 p.m., Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School library.

Dec. 14: No moon.

Dec. 15: Christmas Bird Count with the Juneau Audubon Society, meet no later than 8 a.m. at Valley or downtown McDonald's. Call Mark Schwan, 789-9841, for details.

Dec. 16: Sporting rifle meet at the Hank Harmon Rifle Range, 9 a.m. registration, shoot at 10 a.m.

Dec. 16: Juneau Alpine Club Alan James Climb, 12-mile, seven-hour snowshoe hike. Call Tim Arness, 789-9119, for details.

Dec. 22: Juneau Gun Club Turkey Shoot, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the gun club. Call 789-9844 for details.
