New snowmachine, ATV trails sought

Posted: Thursday, December 06, 2001

The Off Road Vehicle Planning Committee is recommending the city, state and U.S. Forest Service develop new areas for snowmachine and all-terrain vehicle use. The committee includes members of Trail Mix and the Juneau Snowmobile Club.

Recommendations include:

Open the Bessie Creek Trail to winter snowmachine use. The 1 1/4-mile trail starts near mile 34 Glacier Highway.

Open a future gravel pit on the west side of Lemon Creek behind the state prison to year-round use by snowmachines and ATVs.

Improve the Lake Creek Trail from Auke Lake to Spaulding Meadows for winter use and build a new cabin for snowmachiners.

Develop an ORV riding area in the old rock quarry off Fish Creek Road about a mile above North Douglas Highway.

In addition, the snowmobile club plans to continue improvements to the Treadwell Ditch Trail between the Dan Moller Trail and Douglas, including bridging Lawson Creek behind Crow Hill.
