Posted: Sunday, December 06, 2009

CHALKYITSKI - The U.S. Geological Survey says it has not received any reports of damage from an early morning earthquake in a remote area of northern Alaska near the Canadian border.

The quake Saturday had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7, which in some cases can cause moderate damage.

Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist with the USGS, said it was not uncommon for quakes to occur in the area. He called the quake "a pretty quiet event."

The quake occurred 40 miles outside of Chalkyitsik and 205 miles northeast of Fairbanks.
