NENANA - A funeral has been held for Mitch Demientieff, the former Tanana Chiefs Conference leader who died at age 57.
Demientieff was laid to rest Saturday in the Nenana Native Cemetery on Toghotthele Hill, across the frozen Tanana River from the small town where he grew up and where he died.
Earlier in the day, Demientieff's coffin - handmade by community members - was centered in the Nenana Tribal Hall, for an inter-denominational funeral service presided over by a Catholic and an Episcopal priest.
Demientieff in 1973 became the youngest president of the Tanana Chiefs Conference and later served a second term.
