Wrestlers go .500 in Anchorage

Crimson Bears go 2-2 at Jerry Palmer tourney on Friday and Saturday

The Juneau-Douglas High School wrestling team battled to a .500 team record in the Jerry Palmer Invitationals Team Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Anchorage's Bartlett High School.

The Crimson Bears opened with a 50-28 win over Chugiak, then fell to eventual tourney champion Skyview, 40-13, in the second round late Friday.

In consolation round match-ups on Saturday, Juneau beat Colony 57-15, then lost to Soldotna 35-26.

Juneau coach Bob Mahon said he was pleased with his team's performance, especially since it had not faced large Anchorage schools in several years due to a now-abandoned split-season format.

"Coming up and not having seen these guys for two years, we wrestled really well," he said. "We impressed a lot of people."

In Friday's win over Chugiak, Juneau's Isaac Cadiente moved up from his usual 145-pound weight class slot, since the Mustangs did not have an entrant at 145. Cadiente competed - and won - at 152.

Robert Vicario, Jake Ritter and Sungie Musarra all went undefeated against Chugiak, which was ranked fourth in the latest alaskawrestling.com state poll while Juneau was not ranked. Mahon said Cody Wolf and David Liliedahl had pins against the Mustangs.

A very consistent effort led third-ranked Skyview to victory over a worn-down Juneau squad later Friday.

"We were flat, we were tired," Mahon said. "It was a long day for us."

Skyview featured several wrestlers ranked high in the state poll. Juneau's Musarra took on top-ranked Eli Hutchison at 112 pounds.

"(Sungie) lost to him by six points, but it was just a matter of two moves," Mahon said. "He wrestled really well."

Liliedahl also lost a close match at 140 against a tough Panthers wrestler, No. 4-ranked Brandon Cleveland.

Ritter pinned his Skyview opponent at 189.

On Saturday, Juneau stormed back with a convincing win over Colony. Cadiente and Ritter went undefeated in their matches against the Knights.

Soldotna edged Juneau with wins in a number of close matches. Mahon said Vicario wrestled at 215 and injured his ankle in the match, but kept it close and lost by just a couple points. Liliedahl also had a close match but was defeated in overtime.

Cadiente and Gerry Carillo went undefeated against the Stars.

Mahon was pleased with the weekend performances of Carillo and Wolf, both wrestling at 103 pounds.

"They pretty much beat everyone," in regular and exhibition matches, he said. "They stepped out really well."

Mahon also said Cadiente - ranked best in the state at 145 pounds - held his own against the best the large Anchorage, Kenai and Mat-Su schools had to offer.

"Isaac solidified at 145 that he's No.1 right now," Mahon said.

The Crimson Bears return home to host dual meets against Ketchikan and Sitka this Friday and Saturday. Matches will start about 5 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, junior varsity and exhibition matches will begin at 9 a.m., with varsity dual meets starting about 5 p.m.
