Student artist in the Spotlight: Tara Taguchi

Posted: Friday, December 08, 2006

Grade: fifth.

School: Harborview Elementary School.

Art of choice: painting.

Her art teacher, M.K. MacNaughton, says: "Tara is always willing to explore a new art medium. She has the ability to leap into any project, and I'm constantly delighted by her innovative expression of the assignment. She has a wonderful natural sense of balance, color, shape and line. Tara doesn't judge her artwork but enjoys the process of creating it.

Sound off on the important issues at

That is why her art is so free and expressive! For the past two years we've been studying the color spectrum. Tara drew an amazing 3-D pastel that demonstrated opposite colors and contrasts. Look for her piece at the capital in January!"

Reason: "I like to (paint) because it's messy and fun."

Experience: "I've been painting since I was three years old. My mom and dad like art and they like my art."

Favorite artists: "I like Ms. M.K. as an artist. She makes art fun. I like singing at music with Ms. Guiher. This is my favorite kind of music. I like comic books. They're fun to read and look at. I especially like Yu- gi-oh."

Future plans: "I would like to learn how to paint Japanese comic books... I want to invent or create a new comic. My comics would be like Yu-gi-oh."

Other activities: "I am involved in soccer. I also like to play outside and have fun."

Wacky art: "Paint on someone instead of a picture board. This would happen while I'm working on my comic book."

You should know: She has a pet hamster named Ollie.
