Thunder Mountain's Cameron Fronimos is excelling in something he has been around most of his life: wrestling.
The junior grappler, whose father was a wrestler, got his start in sixth grade and will now be competing at the state meet Friday and Saturday inAnchorage.
"He (dad) got me to go out for it, so me and a couple of friends decided to join," he said. "My dad used to wrestle in Hoonah, so I grew up with him teaching me moves."
Fronimos, who was born in Northern California, said he has lived in Juneau since he was 5 years old. He has a younger brother and a younger sister, as well as an older brother, Brian Koenig, who is a senior on the wrestling team.
Though only a junior, Fronimos said he has several interests after high school.
"I might go into the Air Force, and there's a good wrestling school in Arizona, Embry-Riddle (Aeronautical University)," he said. "Also, me and my friends have been talking about moving to Montana and getting some land down there."
In the mean time, he has other plans on the wrestling mat thisweekend.
Hobbies and interests: "Pretty much sports and school. I like to go fishing during the summer and I'm trying to go over to Hoonah and go hunting soon. But, I like outdoors stuff and trying to stay active."
Favorite subject: "I'm really into history. I think it's that I've had really good historyteachers."
Favorite sports movie: "Coach just showed us Vision Quest. I really like Vision Quest, I've been watching it a lot lately. I really like Friday Night Lights, too. That's a really good football movie."
Favorite sports to watch: "During baseball season I love watching baseball. But, I'm a big Denver fan, so I'm a Rockies fan, Broncos fan and Nuggets fan."
Favorite athlete: "My favorite running back of all time is Emmitt Smith, but now I really like Brandon Marshall for the Broncos. He's a beast."
Favorite sports moment: "Two years ago (at JDHS), I was on varsity and we beat South in the semifinals for football. We came back and won by one point. It was an awesome game. I was the PAT holder, and we won on the field goal we kicked. The snapper and I were both sophomores and it was our first time on varsity. It was a big game. My coach said our eyes were as big as bowling balls. We were freaking out. All I could think about was the whole Tony Romo thing a couple years back. I did not want to do that."
