Pay commission hears testimony on Parnell's salary

ANCHORAGE - Only three people showed up Tuesday to testify on a proposed $50,000 salary increase for Gov. Sean Parnell.

The Alaska State Officers Compensation Commission has made a preliminary recommendation to boost the governor's salary from $125,000 to $175,000.

Larry Teague of Eagle River called that a bad idea.

He says the commission justifies the raise in part because the heads of some state agencies are paid more. Teague says the other positions may be overpaid.

Commission chairman Rick Halford says $50,000 is the maximum the commission could recommend and it may ultimately propose a smaller number or nothing at all.

The commission will conduct another public hearing and make its final recommendation in January. The legislature can override its recommendation.
