Student artist in the spotlight: April Toland

School: Yakoosge Daakahidi Alternative High School

Art of choice: April studies many different mediums, including oils, clay, pen, pencil, watercolor, batik and collage.

How long: "I have been doing art since I could pick up a pencil."

Favorite artists: Vincent Van Gogh is one of her favorite artists. She loves the many different blues he uses in his paintings.

Future art plans: Next semester, April will enroll in a ceramics class at University of Alaska Southeast. She is also interested in graphic arts.

Future plans: She hopes to bring more art into the elementary schools.

Inspiration: The most inspirational person in April's life is her grandmother, Marie Toland.

Accomplishments: April will graduate this school year. She has a part-time job at Fred Meyer. She designed a poster for an upcoming art auction to be held at her high school.

Her teacher, Amy Kesten, says: "April is often chosen for special school projects which require the attention and detail of someone as skilled as her. She sticks with projects until they are complete. She is a go-getting person with more determination than I have ever seen."
