FAIRBANKS - State Rep. Mike Kelly has retained his seat by four votes after a recount.
The recount was completed Tuesday in Juneau.
Division of Elections Director Gail Fenumiai said Kelly, a Republican, had 5,024 votes. His Democratic challenger, Karl Kassel, had 5,020 votes.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports observers for the candidates challenged Fenumiai's interpretation of four marginally marked ballots.
Kassel challenged three, and Kelly questioned one.
Fenumiai said Kassel has five days to file an appeal with the Alaska Supreme Court requesting another interpretation of the challenged ballots.
