Sell-off is disaster for public lands

Posted: Sunday, December 11, 2005

Bob Barbee's comments in his My Turn (Dec. 9) regarding selling off public lands were right on target. California Republican Rep. Richard Pombo, chairman of the House Resources Committee, is one of the most devious members of Congress. He knows the majority of Americans want public land to remain public so he placed his provision to sell off public land in a budget bill and labeled it as a way to pay off our horrendous national debt. Sales would generate a billion dollars at most.

The national debt is over $4 trillion. Pombo wants to sell public land to mining companies for as low $1,000 an acre. Note, mining companies are the only recipients of the proposed grand giveaway. Most of the public doesn't want to sell of our lands to anyone, especially the mining industry. This proposed law is a disaster for all public lands not just national parks. The Senate should reject this provision from all public lands, not just national parks.
