First Lady Susan Knowles plans to join in the Read for 2002 "United We Read" campaign held by the Scholastic Book Clubs. On Dec. 14, at noon, she will join students and teachers around the world in reading for 2002 seconds (33 1/3 minutes). She will read to 55 students at Gastineau Elementary School in Douglas, and challenges all schools in Alaska to participate. The program is designed as a celebration of the power of reading to delight, comfort and connect children.

"I am delighted to participate and am pleased to announce that a video of the book reading will air that afternoon on Alaska Rural Communication System (ARCS) television so that children and parents in more than 200 remote villages can enjoy the event as well," Mrs. Knowles said.

Mrs. Knowles is one of many Gubernatorial "First Spouses" who have volunteered to be 2002 Ambassadors of Reading for the program. To support her efforts, Scholastic Book Clubs is donating 500 books to the state of Alaska. Mrs. Knowles, with the help of the Juneau Reading Council, will distribute the books to more than 40 Alaska schools.
