Has anyone seen America lately? I ask because since Sept. 11, in the Empire's letters to the editor, I thought not again I've had glimpses. These are friends and neighbors, fellow Americans, telling how it is for them. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't. It's not easy to be an American, never has been, and even harder to be a human being. So much hatred. So much ignorance. I thank those who have lessened my ignorance, and those who have counseled against hatred. What an abundance and therefore burden Americans have. So rich, all in all, in a world of terrible deprivations of many kinds. Out president, it seems to me, does not help any of us when he speaks repeatedly of the "evil ones." As Pogo long ago observed, "we have met the enemy, and he is us." I believe it.
This is a word of thanks and appreciation to Ruth Vincent who is the manager the Mendenhall Post Office. I've been having a lot of difficulty getting a very important piece of mail that could have cost me potentially thousands of dollars and with a call to Ruth she was able to locate the piece of mail and other mail that for some reason had been held up and not hitting my post office box so I just wanted to say thank you and I appreciate going the extra mile like Ruth Vincent did to make sure that my Christmas was a good one.
I would like to thank all of those people who gave of their time and their talent to present us with another wonderful "King Island Christmas."
