Hoonah takes third at 1A-2A-3A state volleyball tournament

The Hoonah volleyball team finished its season on a winning note, downing Barrow 25-22, 25-21, 25-6 to claim third place Saturday at the Class 1A-2A-3A (West) state tournament in Anchorage.

The Braves, led by all-state seniors Kristi Skaflestad and Cassandra Peters, fell to eventual champ Dillingham in the semifinals, but rebounded to beat the defending state champion Whalers.

Skagway went two-and-out at the 1A-2A-3A tourney, while Gustavus was also eliminated early at the mixed-six state tourney. More details will run later this week in the Empire.

Juneau-Douglas, Sitka wrestlers split a pair of dual meets

The Juneau-Douglas High School wrestling team split a pair of dual meets with the Sitka Wolves this weekend in Sitka, and both the Crimson Bears and the Wolves swept two dual meets from Ketchikan.

The Crimson Bears claimed a 32-27 dual meet victory over Sitka on Saturday, one day after the Wolves edged Juneau 29-27.

On Saturday, Juneau knocked off Ketchikan 56-21 and Sitka beat the Kings 50-26. In Friday's meets, Juneau beat Ketchikan 56-24 and Sitka knocked off the Kings 57-23. Complete results will run later this week.
