Thank you to Juneau and several Southeast Alaska communities for their generous donations of gift filled shoe boxes to needy children around the world, many of whom have never received a gift in their life.
Special thanks to Alaska Marine Lines for donating shipping costs so that seven communities in Southeast could get their shoeboxes to the Collection Center at Chapel by the Lake in Juneau. Also thanks to Tyler Rental for the loan of a pallet jack to assist in loading the shoe box container.
Many thanks to the volunteers who donated their time in packing the boxes on Nov. 21. With the hard work of our local and regional volunteers, we shipped a total of 2,207 boxes, 1,215 of which came from Juneau and 992 from Ketchikan, Petersburg, Haines, Sitka, Wrangell, Skagway and Kake. The destination of the boxes is unknown, but in the past they have been delivered to the Philippines, China, Russia, Peru, Guyana, Panama and many other countries.
Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has delivered more than 77 million gift-filled shoe boxes to needy children in more than 130 countries. For those of you who wanted to donate a box and missed the Juneau collection deadline, it's not too late to donate through the "Build A Box" online program, where you can chose from a selection of gifts to fill a box. Thanks again to all for your help in spreading a little joy and love to the children in the world!
