Activist pushes for more Exxon oil cleanup money

Posted: Sunday, December 12, 2010

ANCHORAGE - Environmental activist Rick Steiner is pushing a federal judge to force Exxon Mobil Corp. to pay more for cleaning up oil that persists from the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill.

The Anchorage Daily News reports Steiner filed a motion this week in Anchorage urging action on a claim four years ago from state and federal governments for $92 million. The governments say lingering oil on Prince William Sound beaches continues to harm wildlife.

Judge Russel Holland added Steiner as a party to the case.

An Exxon spokeswoman said Thursday that Steiner's motion has no merit.
