Anchorage mayor wants family-leave law repealed

ANCHORAGE - Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan is asking the Legislature to repeal Alaska's family and medical leave law.

It gives public employees six weeks of leave beyond the three months covered in the federal Family and Medical Leave Act.

Sullivan's employee relations director, Nancy Bear Usera, says administering the two similar laws is cumbersome.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that at any one time, about 10 percent of the city's 2,800-member work force is out on family or medical leave.
