...for the help with Kids Voting
With the swearing in of Gov. Frank Murkowski and Lt. Gov. Loren Leman, the campaign cycle has come full circle. We believe that Juneau's students will be more attentive to the full spectrum of governmental activities because they have been personally involved in learning about the candidates and issues. The Kids Voting board wants to thank all of those who helped make the program a success this year.
Juneau's 5,500 K-12 students had access to Kids Voting lessons and online curriculum. One-third of them went to the polls to vote and many students worked at the polls, served as part of a student media team, or assisted with reporting Kids Voting results on election night. Our thanks to all of the teachers who taught Kids Voting lessons and encouraged students to vote.
The program received generous financial support from its benefactors: Juneau Gastineau Rotary, Downtown Rotary, Glacier Valley Rotary, City/Borough of Juneau (Youth Activities Grant), Juneau School District and Wells Fargo Bank Alaska.
The Juneau Empire supported the program with ad space and a Web site. Thanks to Kevyn Jacobs and Katy Guyton for technical assistance with the Web site, http://alaskalegislature.com/kidsvote/. Empire staff Julia O'Malley, Riley Woodford, Michael Penn and Andrew Krueger worked with Kids Voting board member Betsy Brenneman to train students in the art of journalism.
Additionally, we want to thank the organizations and hundreds of individuals who helped to make the program a reality. Although they are too numerous to list here, we would like you to look for the Kids Voting "thank you" ad that will appear in the Sunday, Dec. 15, edition of the Empire.
We thank each and every one of you for helping to keep our democracy strong by educating the next generation of voters.

Opera To Go! is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing education, outreach and inspiration through and about opera.
Opera To Go! held a very successful evening of Chills and Thrills Nov. 2 at the Wickersham House. Many local businesses contributed to the success by donating to the silent auction. We would like to publicly thank the following businesses for their generous contributions and commitment to the Arts in Juneau: Fiddlehead Restaurant, Glacier Gardens, Northstar Trekking, Heritage Coffee, Baranof Hotel, Wings of Alaska, Chocolate Lily, Cuts Online, Juneau Racquet Club, Hearthside Books, Annie Kaill's, Four Seasons Marine, Goldbelt Tours, the Alaskan Brewing Co., A Certain Charm and Parry Moore Studios. We want to also thank the other Juneau arts organizations for their contributions to our silent auction. They are: the Juneau Symphony, Perseverance Theatre and Juneau Lyric Opera Company.
Opera To Go! is one of the newest performing arts groups in Juneau. Last year they performed Puccini's production "Madama Butterfly." In February 2003, the opera company will be performing the production composed by Benjamin Britten, "The Turn Of The Screw."

Thank you to Jill Ramiel and Ken Alper, owners of the Silverbow Bakery for helping the JDHS National Honor Society. They graciously offered to donate leftover bagels at the end of each day so that we can take them to the Glory Hole. We're excited about this year-long service project to benefit the underprivileged in Juneau. Thanks again to the Silverbow for their support.

Thank you to Chief John Walsh and the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department with Douglas Electric's Boom truck for stringing and hooking up lights. Thank you to the Douglas Community Methodist Church for use of their lovely tree and power source.
About 150 plus people came on a pleasant evening. The Stroller White Pipers played tunes through out the event. Mayor Sally Smith spoke about community spirit and togetherness. People cheered when she turned on the lights. Boy Scouts under Neil Nesheim and Girl Scouts under Karen Larson sang carols. Pat Peterson spoke about the upcoming opening of Treadwell Arena. There was also group singing. A special gift this year was the Methodist Men giving hot punch, cookies and candy canes outside and inside the church reception area to all who came.
The Douglas 4th of July Committee also thanks all Douglas business and home owners for decorating their buildings this year.
The nice part was that families and friends lingered to visit with bagpipe music.

Healthy Families Juneau would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Opera To Go! for their generous donation from a silent auction of a hand-painted silk mobile, created by local artist Bridget Milligan, owner of the Kodiak Coat Company, during its Spring production of Madama Butterfly. The generous donation has allowed our program to expand its support to breastfeeding families with the purchase of breastfeeding supplies and training materials. Through this collaboration, Opera To Go! has made a significant difference in the lives of Juneau's families. Thank you.
