Hoonah resident Gary Paul Smith died Dec. 8, 2002, in Hoonah.
He was born Dec. 7, 1963, in Juneau. He lived most of his life in Hoonah. He was T'akdeintaan, from Yeil Ku Dee Hit, and Kaagwaantaan Yadi.
He was employed by Southeast Stevedoring as a longshoreman and worked at the Hoonah Cold Storage on a seasonal basis. He was a shareholder of Goldbelt and Sealaska corporations.
His family said he will be remembered for his gentle manner, his quiet attitude, his smile and meaningful recognition when he met family or friends. He enjoyed reading, especially the Bible. They said he loved taking part in any family activity and dinners, looking forward to his mother's visits home.
He was preceded in death by grandparents George and Jessie Dalton and Daniel and Sarah Sharclane; father Paul Smith Sr.; brother Martin Smith Sr.; aunts Delores Nietzel and Norma Rockwood; and uncle Charlie Sharclane.
He is survived by his daughter Jolene Smith of Hoonah; granddaughters Delores and Monique of Hoonah; mother Diane Carrier of Juneau; brothers Moses and Paul Smith of Juneau and Daniel Smith of Hoonah; sisters Cheryl and Carolyn Carrier, and Corrine Gonzales of Everett, Wash.; aunts Myrtle Brodgon of Seattle and Sarah (Robert) Lampe; uncles Daniel Sharclane of Juneau, and Phillip Sharclane Sr., Harry Sharclane, John Sharclane, Dean Sharclane of Hoonah; and numerous cousins.
The pallbearers are : Robert E. Sharclane, Jason Sharclane, William Brown, James White, Millard Carteeti, and Frank Lindoff. The honorary pallbearers are: Richard Marvin Sr., Sam Hanlon Sr., Ed Mercer Jr., John Waldron, Violet James, and Richard Dalton Jr.
A viewing will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Alaskan Mortuary in Juneau. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at the ANB Hall in Hoonah. A funeral service will be held at noon Monday, Dec. 16, at the ANB Hall in Hoonah.
