Former Gov. Walter Hickel works in his office in the Capitol circa 1966. Hickel was governor from 1966 to 1969 and 1990 to 1994. He first ran as a Republican, but left the GOP in 1990 and ran successfully with the Alaskan Independence Party. He also was a member of the Republican National Committee from 1954 to 1964. He served as the U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1969 to 1970.
