Thanks to Leo and Alice Jones for their beautiful Christmas tree in Auke Bay. My fisherman husband says it's a real beacon when out on the water in a boat. We on the land like it, too.

I would like to thank Gastineau Human Services for the display of their Christmas spirit in the lights they have put up. Also, for the energy that they exert into the community.

It is absolutely great to see Mike Sica writing for the Juneau Empire again. He has been sorely missed. Welcome back, Mike.

Thank you to whoever returned my merchandise. Nice to see we are still honest in Douglas.

The only reason not to tape-record a meeting is because somebody doesn't want an impartial and accurate record of what was said.

I have been in three stores this week and the sale price wasn't registered in their computers. Buyers beware, but don't get angry at the checkers. Talk to the managers.

With the Knowles Administration's appointment of Shirley Holloway as commissioner of education, we have just moved another cabinet-level position to Anchorage.

Hi. This is another call about the tree. I'm glad somebody cares. That person is Mother Nature's helper and we love 'em.

I'm getting a little tired of people complaining about the tree by Fred Meyer. Where have you been? Look around. It was decorated for Halloween, too. The tree was not put there, it's been growing.

Today I saw three cars run red lights. There is no rush. I would hate to not have a loved one around for the holidays.

There is no broad community support for the middle school concept in this school district Three-and-one-half-years ago parents at Gastineau Elementary voted in favor of returning sixth graders to elementary schools.

If I had all the millions of dollars that people waste on electricity to operate all those unnecessary lights during the Christmas season, I would donate it to building the ice rink and the road and all the other stuff that people are claiming costs too much.

It's such a pleasure to take the bus and leave the driving to someone else.

Anybody who watched Gore's speech could see he should be President. It will be a long four years watching Bush's snide attitude.

Actor Alec Baldwin said he would move to another country if George Bush won the election. I hope he doesn't let the door hit him in the rear on the way out.

I was happy to see that the U.S. Supreme Court voted a man to the presidency that received less votes than his opponent. I hope the Republicans are happy.

Now that five conservative Supreme Court justices handed the presidency over to Bush, it is the hypocritical Republicans who are now calling for calm and bipartisanship.

Why vote? It doesn't do any good, especially for the disenfranchised voters in Florida.

Our Supreme Court is more bipartisan than our Congress.

It is a sorry day for our country when the people's vote is ignored.

Why couldn't all the votes be counted? What were Bush and the Supreme Court so afraid of?

I've won and I've lost but I've always believed in and for the process. Now that, too, is gone. It is a dark and frightening day for our democracy.
