Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Saturday ski/snowshoe -- Meet at 9 a.m. at the Spaulding Meadows Trailhead, Mile 12.3 Glacier Highway, for this week's trek, a moderately difficult ski along the Spaulding Meadows Trail. The trek features great panoramic views of Lynn Canall, the Chilkat Mountain Range, the Mount McGinnis area, and Douglas and Admiralty islands. Bring cross-country skis and/or snowshoes, wear warm layers of clothing and bring plenty of food and water. No dogs or firearms allowed. Info: Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.

Juneau-Douglas High School swimming and diving team Christmas tree sale -- The annual fund-raiser opened Saturday and takes place through Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Fred Meyer parking lot. The Crimson Bears are selling noble and grand fir trees from 5-8 p.m. on Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation youth soccer coaches -- Volunteer soccer coaches are needed for the upcoming Youth Indoor Soccer League. Applications are available at the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office, 155 S. Seward St., downtown. Anyone who is knowledgeable about the sports of soccer and enjoys working with kids is encouraged to apply. Southeast Road Runners club Ben Blackgoat scholarship -- Applications are available at the Juneau-Douglas High School career center for JDHS senior cross country and/or track and field athletes. The seniors need to write an essay expressing their feelings about running and its impact on their lives. Applications are due by Friday, Dec. 21. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation coed volleyball registration -- Team registration packets for the 2002 adult coed volleyball season are available at the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office, Room 218 of the municipal building, 155 South Seward Street downtown. Team registration will take place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Juneau Assembly Chambers. Southeast Alaska Avalanche Center workshops -- Avalanche workshops will take place in Juneau, Petersburg, Haines and Ketchikan. An avalanche awareness class takes place in Juneau at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, at McPhetres Hall, at 4th and Gold, with a fee of $5 ($3 for students). Level I backcountry courses are Dec. 26-29 and March 1-4 in Juneau and March 15-18 in Haines, with the three-day intensive Level I classes costing $295 ($220 students/low income). A Level II backcountry course is Jan. 25-28 in Juneau and costs $325 ($250 students/low income). Courses for all snow travelers, including snowmachiners, lasting 1 1/2 days take place in Juneau on Jan. 4-6, in Petersburg on Jan. 31-Feb. 3 and in Ketchikan on a date TBA. Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay gear -- The Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation has Salt Lake City Olympic Torch Relay t-shirts and baseball hats for sale to commeorate the Olympic torch's visit to Juneau on Jan. 24. Items can be purchased and the Parks and Rec office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Also, volunteers are being sought to help with the Torch Relay when it visits Juneau. Team Alaska tryouts for 2002 Arctic Winter Games -- Team Alaska representatives are still being selected in some sports for the 2002 Arctic Winter Games to be held on March 17-23. The 2002 Arctic Winter Games will have some events in Nuuk, Greenland, and some events in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada. The Arctic Winter Games take place every two years and features competition between Alaska, four Canadian provinces or territories, Greenland and two or three Russian regions. Most of the sports are for youth competitors, with events in arctic sports (Inuit and Dene games), alpine skiing, snowboarding, nordic skiing, snowshoeing, badminton, indoor soccer, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, curling, sled dog racing, gymnastics, hockey, speedskating and wrestling. Juneau 4-H Nordic Ski program -- The club skis from 1:30-3 p.m. every Sunday starting on Jan. 6. Membership is $6 to join 4-H, plus club ski rental is $20 for the season. Students renting skis are expected to attend at least 80 percent of the club ski outings. Parents are encouraged to participate, but they must provide their own skis. Open roller hockey scrimmages -- Regular open roller hockey scrimmages for high-school age players and adults this summer are from 8-10 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday night at the Glacier Valley Elementary School's outdoor covered area.
