For the past 26 years I've practiced law as an adversary to the police. Because I practice statewide, I've had considerable experience with many police departments. Without question, Juneau's police officers are the best in the state.
The Assembly should listen carefully to the patrol cops' personal needs and take a long-range view of morale issues. Being a street cop is a tough, thankless job. Juneau will continue to need police officers who are well-educated, well-trained, well-rested and well-paid. Everybody - most especially people the cops have to arrest - suffers when a police department is staffed by tired, angry, dispirited police officers. In fact, double their salaries while you're at it. That way, I won't feel so sympathetic when I go after them with fangs bared.
