Man facing homicide charge had violent past

ANCHORAGE - A man charged with killing his girlfriend and dumping her body on a remote Kenai Peninsula shoreline had three restraining orders issued against him when he was arrested.

Brian Hurley, 42, was charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the death of Isabell Matthews, 28.

Prosecutors say Hurley killed the woman Saturday at a south Anchorage apartment, then drove more than 200 miles in a rented sport utility vehicle and dumped the body near Anchor Point north of Homer.

Matthews' body was found Saturday afternoon.

Anchorage police say they received a call Dec. 4 about the couple fighting. When they showed up, nobody was around, said Lt. Paul Honeman said.

Statements included in a half-dozen restraining order applications sought over several years against Hurley said he was violent and unpredictable.

Former roommate Laquenta Cameron said in an application for a restraining order issued less than a week ago that Hurley was dangerous.

"No less than eight times in the last few weeks he has physically fought with Isabelle and it has carried over into our room because she was trying to use the phone in our room to call the police or a ride and he was trying to yank the phone out of her hand and almost stepped on my daughter's head," Cameron said in her application.

"No one feels safe around Brian," she said.

In the same application, landlord Sam Mallipudi said Matthews had e-mailed him saying she was afraid for her life. Mallipudi also said Matthews had tried to leave Hurley.

Another roommate, Dan Perkins, said in a statement that Hurley had threatened him, waving a saw blade close to his face. Perkins said Hurley had put Perkins' cell phone into a microwave oven and turned the oven on "so I couldn't call the police."
