Posted: Sunday, December 14, 2008

HAINES - SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium Haines Health Center clinical medical director Dr. J. Russell "Russ" Bowman, DO, MHA, recently earned his Certified Physician Executive credential from the American College of Physician Executives.

The CPE credential requires a physician to also hold a masters level management degree (MBA, MPH, MS, MMM or MHA), have medical management experience and pass a comprehensive exam from the Certifying Commission on Medical Management.

"Bowman's successful completion of the American College of Physician Executives curriculum is a remarkable achievement," said Dr. David Vastola, MD, SEARHC Community Health Services medical director. "He completed this course of study while holding full-time positions first with the United States Coast Guard and now with SEARHC. The designation as a Certified Physician Executive (CPE) indicates that a physician has reached a superior level of excellence in medical management, with the education, expertise and demonstrated skills necessarily to effectively lead health care organizations. We all congratulate Bowman on this achievement."

"The CPE qualification is the gold standard for physician administrators," Bowman said. "It demonstrates commitment to improving quality of care and proficiency in communicating and problem solving with physicians and administrators."

Bowman joined the medical staff at the SEARHC Haines Health Center in June 2007 and currently holds the rank of captain in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. He came to SEARHC when he transfered to the USPHS Commissioned Corps from the U.S. Coast Guard, where he spent his last six years as director of the Air Station Sitka medical clinic. Bowman also has extensive experience working in emergency medicine, having served as a flight surgeon for 18 years combined with both the U.S. Army National Guard in West Virginia (1989-96, active duty and reserves) and with the U.S. Coast Guard in Virginia and Alaska (1993-2007).

Bowman earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, Mo. In August 2007, he earned a Master of Health Administration degree from the University of Washington (Seattle). Bowman has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., and a Master of Science degree from the Marshall University Department of Family and Community Health in Huntington, W.V. He completed a residency in family medicine at Marshall University and a fellowship in emergency medicine at the Charleston Area Medical Center and West Virginia University (Charleston, W.V.). Bowman is board certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and in emergency medicine by the American Association of Physician Specialists. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians.
