Association to hold commercial fishing vessel safety training

Posted: Sunday, December 14, 2008

JUNEAU - Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a 18-hour fishing vessel safety and drill conductor course from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Jan. 26-28 at the Department of Environmental Conservation offices, 410 Willoughby Ave., in Juneau.

This course is U.S. Coast Guard approved and meets training requirements for commercial fishing vessels. However, the course is open to all mariners, whether or not they fish commercially. Cost for this course is $200 or $150 for AMSEA members. It is available free to licensed commercial fishermen thanks to funding from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Those who have already taken the course are encouraged to attend again and refresh their skills. A study by NIOSH determined that after five years, the effectiveness of the training in reducing fatalities declines significantly.

Space is limited. To register, call Rick Petersen at AMSEA's Sitka Office at 888-508-3287 or 907-747-3287.
