Chenega forced back to Auke Bay

JUNEAU - Rough seas and high winds have forced the fast ferry Chenega to return to Juneau's Auke Bay an hour after departing.

The Alaska Marine Highway System reported the state ferry's trip to Haines and Skagway was canceled.

The ferry's captain reported waves more than 10 feet and winds at more than 40 mph off the cost of Sentinel Island.

Officials say there were no reports of injuries to passengers or damage to the ship.

The passengers and vehicles were transferred to the ferry Taku to complete the trip Friday afternoon.

Chenega's Saturday sailing also was canceled because of continued poor weather in the forecast.
